In the first of a series of posts on largely unreached people groups, Mtumishi reports on a Swahili group of 73,400 people, the Bajun of Lamu, and leads us in prayer for them.
Faza Island off the Kenyan coast is the dwelling place of the Bajun people. They are the result of intermarriages between Arabs and native coastal tribes. They are predominantly Shafite Muslims though they integrate it with the worship of ancestors and believe in spirits. Witchcraft is a norm among them and belief in appeasing evil spirits so that they don’t harm them. They also believe that there is no need to worship God because he causes no harm and therefore needs not to be pleased. And so as the Lord leads you today after receiving this background information pray today.
To God be the glory great things He has done,
so loved He the world that He sent us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
and opened the life gate that all may go in.
Yes, so that all may go in! The “all” here means men and women from all nations and tribes and languages who will stand before the throne of God to declare, “worthy is the Lord God Almighty, and worthy is the lamb.” Among these nations shall be the Bajun people. Today we commend the dwellers of Faza Island in the hands of God. May the Lord open their hearts that they may believe in Him who died for them on the cross of Calvary. May the Lord open their eyes that they may look upon Him who was pierced for their transgression. May the Lord cause their souls to yearn for Him who gives them life in abundance. May their minds be transformed that they may think of their creator who commands the events in their lives and now has brought them the message of salvation. We pray for the leaders of the Bajun people, that they may be receptive to the messengers God is sending their way. We pray for the inhabitants of Faza, that they favourably live with the messengers sent to them and like the city of Nineveh listen to the word delivered to them, that they may turn away from their futile idols and turn to the God of heavens and this for their own good and to the glory of Yahweh the Great I AM.
Amen and Shalom
And for those working among the Bajun pray that the Lord shall give them wisdom to reach out and to share the gospel to the local people. Pray for favour and acceptance among the community as they serve. Pray for strength and provision for these workers and the projects. And in all things whether by deed or by words, do all things for the glory of the Lord God Almighty.
Shalom brethren.
